Everything You Need To Know About Meme Marketing

What is Meme Marketing?

Well, I’m sure you have some idea about it. But let me answer it anyway. Meme marketing simply put, is the use of memes to promote a brand, product or service. The objective is to increase awareness, enhance reputation and thereby drive sales. The humorous or satirical content of memes make them relatable to modern day internet users. Meme marketing leverages this relatability of memes to engage audiences and promote products.

Deep Dive into Meme Marketing:

1. The Appeal of Meme Marketing

  • Memes have more potential to go viral than any other content type Memes are designed to be shared easily across the internet no matter what platform. Their contents usually include popular cultural references, catchphrases or other visual formats that provide a quick dose of humour. This makes them inherently viral. Now when you know something has great potential to go viral, why not use it in marketing. And if one of your memes does go viral, that’s a marketing campaign without major advertising costs. That’s the appeal of meme marketing. :)

  • People love to laugh Humour is a universal language. Memes are an excellent way of delivering it. People find humour in absurdity, irony, music, fashion, pop culture, sarcasm, and numerous other things and meme marketing takes advantage of this fact by delivering relatable, humorous content. When brands use humour effectively, they create a more human interaction instead of a formal, buttoned-up approach. Relatability leads to increased engagement. Wouldn’t you remember a brand that made you smile or laugh?

  • Memes are fun but they also help build brand personality Whether it’s a tongue in cheek remark, playful banter or clever wordplay, meme marketing allows brands to express their personality in a different way compared to traditional marketing. Twitter is one place where you see a lot of popular brands actively using memes to engage with their audience. In the modern, technology first world, we can already see meme marketing becoming popular and brands embracing it as part of their marketing strategies.

2. Why Meme Marketing is Relevant Today

Because memes are everywhere! Every social media platform has a healthy dose of memes finding their way to your feed daily. What’s truly remarkable about memes, or meme marketing, is the fact that they are this unique fom of communication that resonates with nearly every kind of audience. From a school going kid to an elderly grandmother. And when you think about the Millennials and the Gen Z, nothing could be more relatable to them than memes. By speaking the language of the internet with meme marketing, brands can create a bridge to their target customers.

  • In the technology-driven world, meme marketing is the quickest way to increase awareness because of their enormous potential for virality and reach.

  • Memes are often tied to current trends or cultural moments. Brands that keep up with changing trends can demonstrate cultural awareness and relevance.

  • Meme marketing is a cost-effective and extremely flexible marketing approach. Meme marketing doesn’t require huge budgets or elaborate planning. Consistency in meme marketing can help brands grow organically.

3. Key Components of Meme Marketing

Meme marketing as a strategy will only yield fruitful results when it includes the following essential components:

  • Good Understanding of Meme Culture: Staying up-to-date with the latest meme trends, humour styles, trending topics, etc. is important. Remember, familiarity with the most recent internet culture is essential to create engaging memes.

  • Knowing your Audience: Who is your target audience? Create memes particularly relatable to these personas. Knowing the interests, demographics and online behaviour of your audience can enhance your distribution strategy.

  • Aligned to your Brand Values/Personality: Humour is great but it shouldn’t move you away from the values or the personality of the brand. Meme marketing should emphasize and reinforce the brand identity.

meme marketing creativity
  • Content Creation: Creating memes is about creativity, not necessarily originality. Create original memes or simply repurpose existing memes with a creative twist that makes it funnier or more relatable. Analyse audience feedback consistently to drive your meme ideas.

  • Selecting the Right Platform: There’s Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, TikTok, Facebook and Pinterest that I can think of among internet platforms. Alternatively, it could be your company or product’s webpage, ebook, newsletter, email, etc. You don’t have to focus on all at once. Find where your target audience spends the most time. Start from there.

  • Timing and Relevance: Meme marketing is not just about fun. It’s also about discipline and consistency. Post at the right time on the right topics, considering cultural events, trends and audience behaviour.

  • Measurement and Analytics: When you measure the effectiveness of all other marketing campaigns and channels, meme marketing shouldn’t be treated any different. Use analytics tool to measure the reach and engagement of your memes and refine your meme marketing strategy.

4. How to Create Effective Memes for Marketing

Creating memes that are extremely relatable or hilarious is no easy task, although it does seem like that when you see the amount of memes floating around everyday. It involves a combination of creativity, cultural awareness and strategic thinking. Here are some steps that I think might help in creating effective memes for marketing:

meme marketing tips

  • Research Trending Memes

Look at what memes or topics are trending. Here’s a website that might help. Spend time on Reddit’s r/memes or monitor the trending topics on Twitter. Find popular meme formats and themes that will align with your campaign.

  • Develop a Rough Idea

Brainstorm concepts for meme marketing. Concepts that relate to your brand or product. Consider humor, irony, and cultural references. Is it appropriate for your target audience? Is it consistent with your brand image? Answer these questions with a yes before moving forward.

  • Design the Meme

I found this cool AI-based meme generator that I use to create memes for my blogs called Supermeme.ai. You can use this tool or try meme templates available on the internet or create custom designs or edit designs on Canva, Adobe Spark, etc. There are also many Meme Generator tools that make it easy to design memes. Ensure the meme is visually appealing and easy to read.

  • Test the Meme

This is a good thing to do. I usually try this myself when I’m confused about reactions. Test the meme with a small group or internal team to gauge reactions. Ensure the meme doesn't offend or misrepresent your brand. If everybody is all smiles, you’ve got a good one.

  • Publish and Monitor

Post the meme on selected platforms and keep checking engagement. Interact with users in the comments and show empathy. Be human and keep it candid. Use analytics tools to monitor performance from other platforms like blogs, website, newsletters, emails, etc.

5. Where Can You Use Memes in Your Marketing

Not a day goes by without seeing at least one meme on the internet. They have become a staple of online culture or maybe I’m just spending too much time on social media. Again, if memes are omnipresent, why shouldn’t we blend it with a little marketing to engage modern consumers?

Social Media Platforms: Instagram

One of the most popular social media platforms that needs no introduction and among the ideal platforms for meme marketing. Instagram emphasizes on visual content, which is perfect for meme marketing. Post, stories, reels, there is a range of creative formats for you to experiment with.

Facebook

Facebook's broader demographic reach makes it suitable for a wide range of meme marketing strategies. On Facebook, memes can be used to engage with different age groups and interests. From posts to groups to stories, Facebook has a lot of features to try.

Twitter

Twitter feels like a really fast-paced environment to me. Which, in my opinion, makes it ideal for meme marketing. People want instant gratification, memes are a small way of providing that. Memes do the talking visually and twitter’s character limits don’t apply to memes.

TikTok

Honestly, I’ve never been an active TikTok user (even when it was not banned in my country). But with 1.5 billion monthly active users, TikTok does seem like a great platform that can generate visibility and awareness.

LinkedIn

Yes, LinkedIn is a platform for professionals but memes, unsurprisingly, have found their place on this platform too. But not as distractions but in the form of meme marketing that users enjoy and interact with. A right balance of humour and marketing is something most, if not, all people appreciate.

Email Marketing:

While memes are primarily associated with social media, they can also be used in email marketing to engage subscribers and add a touch of humor to your campaigns.

Email Newsletters:  Brands can experiment with memes that relate to product pain point, feature, use case, events, announcements, etc. and make them more engaging instead of sending a usual newsletter with a strictly formal tone.

Promotional Emails: Memes can help increase the click and open rates of promotional emails by capturing the recipients’ attention. An email with a meme can stand out from the rest of the emails in the inbox

Customer Service and Support: A friendly touch is always great while interacting with customers. Memes might add a human-touch to service emails and can even help diffuse tensions through humour. Remember to find a balance and not overdo it. The last thing an angry customer wants to see is a meme instead of a resolved ticket.

Websites and Blogs:

Meme marketing is also ideal for websites and blogs. Take a look at this blog, I have used memes extensively here. Even if you didn’t find the content informational, you’d at least find a few of the memes funny. That’s a small milestone for a small-time blogger like me.

meme marketing in blogs

In blog posts, like this one, memes can break up the text and add visual interest. I’ve tried to inject some humour (that is relatable to the contents of this blog) through memes here.  In landing pages, memes can serve as a great way to grab the attention of visitors. If the first thing they see is a funny meme, I’d bet they’ll explore a little further. Memes also set a tone in the conversation between the brand and the user even before the actual conversation takes place.

Digital Ad Campaigns:

Integrating meme marketing into your digital marketing plans can be a good way to increase engagement. You are paying for digital ads and if meme marketing can improve the performance metrics, it is worth trying to validate that.

memes in advertising

Memes in Social Media Ads: Social Media is where all the memes are. Creating meme-based ads can attract attention and improve click-through rates. Again, it shouldn’t just be funny, it should relate to a real problem or pain point the customer is looking to solve through your product.

Memes in Banner Ads and Display Ads: Displays Ads usually don’t perform as well as other ad forms. In such a scenario, meme marketing is a healthy dose of refreshment and can help your ad stand out from the rest.

6. Successful Meme Marketing Strategies

Like every digital or social media marketing initiative, meme marketing requires some important strategies to be aware of to maximize its impact.

meme marketing strategy

  • User-Generated Content (UGC): While you continue to use meme marketing as a means to promote your brand/product, you should also encourage users to create and share memes related to your brand. This can enhance engagement between your brand and consumers. Try experimenting with meme-making contests to incentivise users to create memes about your brand and share it on the internet.

  • Collaborations and Partnerships:

Collaborate with influencers, meme accounts, or other brands to create and share memes. This approach can expand your reach and help you tap into new audiences.

  • Reactive Memes:

Create memes in response to trending events, news, or cultural moments. This might need quick responses at times but can lead to significant engagement since the topic is trending already.

  • Consistent Posting:

This is an extremely important point. Maintain a consistent posting schedule to keep your audience engaged. Regularly posting memes helps build brand recognition and keeps your brand top-of-mind. To build a lasting impression, consistency and patience are key. Don’t expect your memes to go viral instantly. Keep at it and it will come eventually.

  • Brand Storytelling:

Stay true to your brand. The relatable nature of memes can sometimes become a nuisance. Find the right balance between the product-related messaging and humour and stay connected to your brand values.

7. Examples of Brands Using Meme Marketing

Many brands have embraced meme marketing to connect with younger audiences, create viral content, and increase engagement on social media platforms. Here’s a small list of some brands that kick ass when it comes to meme marketing.

  • Taco Bell:

Taco Bell has a reputation for using humorous and irreverent content on social media. As a fast food chain, they often create and share memes which are totally relatable to their target demographic, mainly Millennials and Gen Z. You can check out their Instagram and Twitter to see how they engage in playful interactions with their audience. See this example.

  • Aviation Gin:

Aviation Gin, the gin brand, is known for its witty marketing, thanks to actor Ryan Reynolds who is one of the owners of the company. Their use of tongue-in-cheek memes combined with Reynold’s comedic style has helped the brand gain enormously visibility across the globe. See this example.

  • Netflix:

Netflix constantly uses meme marketing to promote popular shows and movies. You must have seen memes containing iconic scenes or quotes like memes from The Office, Breaking Bad or Friends. Netflix's social media accounts use meme marketing to encourage user interaction, creating a sense of community among viewers. See this example.

  • Wendy's:

Wendy’s is known for its bold and humorous social media presence. How many of you remember the time when Wendy's roasted users on Twitter, creating a viral "savage Wendy's" meme that attracted widespread attention. Personally, I love the brand’s quirky meme marketing approach. Here’s a recent one they posted poking fun at their competitor McDonald’s.

meme marketing examples

These examples just go on to show that meme marketing can be a highly effective way to engage audiences and create viral content. However, it's important for brands to understand their target audience and ensure that their meme marketing efforts align with their brand's voice and values.

8. Challenges and Risks in Meme Marketing

The biggest challenge or risk with meme marketing is being careful with the content. Any accidental insensitivity towards culture, religion, race, language or any discriminatory or offensive content could destroy your brand. Besides this, memes have a short lifespans, and a meme that's trending today may become irrelevant tomorrow. While meme marketing offers many benefits, it also comes with challenges and risks:

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Memes can be misinterpreted or cause offense if not carefully crafted. Make sure your meme content is reviewed by a small subset of people internally before it goes out in public. Avoid controversial topics, do not post anything that leaves the message open to misinterpretation.

  • Short Lifecycle:  Memes have a short lifespan. While that’s not always the case, given the abundance of memes out there, it is important to stay flexible and adapt to changing trends.

  • Brand Consistency:  Memes should align with your brand's voice and values. Inconsistent messaging can confuse or alienate your audience.

  • Legal Issues:  While memes are usually protected under fair usage policy, it is still better to be cautious about using copyrighted material or imagery. However, I’d recommend you to seek an opinion from an expert about this.

9. Summary - Key Benefits of Meme Marketing

  • High Engagement and Shareability:

Memes are designed to be engaging, with simple visuals and concise text that make them easy to understand and share. Using memes in marketing can lead to increased visibility as users are more likely to like, share or comment on a meme when compared to traditional content types like blogs, webpages, ebooks, etc.

  • Cost-Effectiveness:

Meme marketing is generally more cost-effective than traditional advertising methods as it helps reach new audience at no/low advertising costs. Meme marketing requires minimal resources and time, often involving simple design tools or templates. The cost-effectiveness of meme marketing allows brands to experiment with different meme formats and campaigns without significant financial risk.

  • Ability to Connect with Younger Audiences (Millennials and Generation-Z):

Millennials and Generation Z are the primary consumers of meme culture. And if your target audience belongs to these generations, meme marketing is certainly for you. These generations are more likely to engage with brands that understand and participate in internet culture. Meme marketing provides a direct way to connect with these younger audiences, creating a sense of community and belonging.

  • Cultural Relevance and Timelines:

Since memes are often tied to current events, trends, or cultural moments, monitoring these trends and staying relevant can help enhance brand image. This projects your brand as culturally aware and makes it more appealing to modern customers. Posting on time and staying a part of the ongoing internet conversations and trends is essential in making a lasting impression.
